The Duchess | Partita No. 4

"The Duchess" is a seven-movement piece for solo guitar, which will be the fourth and final of my set of partitas. Like my Partita No. 3 (La Comète), its narrative historicality outweighs its adoption of technicity and affect; the work borrows from my Dit de l'alerion, pointing the fin amor of Guillaume de Machaut's poem on falcons towards his patroness, Bonne of Luxembourg (1315-1349), creating an impressionistic take on Bonne's life, from her famous Prayer Book, with haunting instances of the Three Living and Three Dead motif and of David's excessive energy dancing, articulated in virtuosity and intensity.
